The two largest commercial banks in New England, Bankboston and Fleet, recently merged to form Fleetboston. If you had an account with either of these banks, you could find one of their ATMs almost anywhere around here, and there you could do your banking up until this week without paying NYCE (third party) fees. Now that the two banks are one, we will be paying onerous fees for every ATM transaction, for every check we use, and for every time we see a live teller.

For a prescient comment on the occasion of Fleet and Bankboston announcing their merger last year, see my March 28, 1999 cartoon.
