The Glass Slipper is a strip joint in Boston's Combat Zone, a section of Boston bordering Chinatown which is set aside for adult entertainment. Its owners applied for permits to expand, intending to add a stage and nearly double their capacity. Defending the club against charges that it inspires criminal activity, co-owner Nicholas Romano said, “We run a clean ship. We are high end. People pay $8 a beer here. I don't want the bums inside.” Nevertheless, in the face of strong protests by Chinatown residents and community organizations, the permits were eventually denied.
